Hey there, Watercolor.

I’m Denise. I know we don’t really hang out and it’s mostly because I’ve been so involved with my other friend oil. I hear you don’t mix (although I’ve got some ideas about how to get you together for a little soiree on the same canvas but more on that later). What’s great about our relationship so far is that I don’t know that much about you so I’m open to whatever you have to offer. I’m not trying to force you into some preconceived notion about how you should behave and what you should look like.

And here’s my caveat. The more I get to know you, the more I’ll probably want to control you. The more I’ll say words like “should” and “don’t” and “oh no!”. Don’t let me. Remind me that this– brush touching paper– is a sacred act, one as much about exploration as it is about discovery, as much about play as it is work. Remind me that control is just an illusion anyway, and that you’re willing to let me participate in your patterns if I don’t fight them.

Today’s painting is a little bluebird, a subject I’ve painted repeatedly with oil, but never with you. Same subject, but a different experience entirely now that it’s with you.

I’m not saying we’re going to ride off into the sunset together, but let’s keep this going. I think I have a lot to learn from you.
