“Flash of Red” 4×4, oil on canvas, $80.00

“Color is my day-long obsession, joy and torment.” — Claude Monet

I have loved many things in my life– watching rain through big windows, water that flows but doesn’t rush, the scent of the trinity (onion, pepper, celery) cooking in my parents or grandmother’s kitchens, moss hanging from cypress trees. But what I think I have loved the most is color. All my paintings are probably about color– the interplay, the juxtapositions, the celebration.

There is something exciting to me about bright red next to green. Across from one another on the color wheel, we call them both opposites and compliments– which is the larger lesson color has encouraged me to apply to my life in more than just painting. There is something exciting to me about catching that flash of red in the duller greens of the trees in my neighborhood when a cardinal flits from branch to branch.

Is it truly day 3o? I don’t know how many more days I’ll keep with it, but I do know color never runs out, its lessons never end.
