I got such a great response to my first peacock post that I decided to do another one. I attempted one yesterday, a peacock with its tail fanned, but I just wasn’t into the feathers. I started over today and this is the result. I haven’t read a Flannery O’Connor story in years. I’m almost scared to, afraid that the magic they once held for me may have somehow disappeared as I’ve grown older and pursued different interests, read other books (when I first discovered her, I read her exclusively). Below is a picture of her with a couple of her peacocks.
And though she wasn’t near as good of a painter as she was a writer, she did attempt a self portrait that included, of course, her beloved bird.
I’ve been familiar with this image for years, but yesterday I couldn’t shake the notion that I should do a self-portrait with a pelican. I’ve never held a pelican, and O’Connor’s peacocks wandered freely through her yard. She touched and fed them. I watch pelicans from a distance. Can’t ever get close enough. But I can’t help but think I need to reference this portrait in a painting. Its not so much to elevate myself to O’Connor status, but more an attempt to give her a nod. Perhaps a wink.
