When I don’t know what to paint, I paint the bird that made me a bird watcher. Usually I like them in flight, on the verge of something, in pursuit or escape. But every once in a while, I like the quiet, still pelican. The one that hasn’t decided yet what he’s going to do or where he’s going. The one waiting.
I’ve been in a one-day-at-a-time mode since Ezra was a newborn and I was nursing. When I thought about nursing nine times a day for months and months I became so overwhelmed I wanted to quit. I constantly told myself to just get through today. Just make sure he is fed today. It’s a bird-ish philosophy, I suppose. Birds who don’t reap nor sow and yet are fed. Sufficient for a day.
And that’s all fine, but I’m hoping for the day whose limits are not itself. The future I can shape not just in the now. Hurdles jumped, contracts voided. Skies open. Ready for flight.
