Day 28. Grief

“Play On” 6×6 in oil on canvas, framed

I really wasn’t planning to paint a second line band this 31, but, a little exhausted by trying to keep a consistent theme, I decided to just give it a go.

We lost my beloved grandmother nearly a year ago, and while we did not have a second line band at her funeral, the music of her life keeps playing, on repeat, in my mind.

Even Then

Even when you’ve kept vigil in a fold-out chair

Every sigh or shift an awakening

Even after the devotion to the quilt

That came with the hospice bed

Gently pulling it up over fingers and shoulders

Folding it down with one solid crease–

Moving our hands to still our hearts

After the ice water has been

Poured into plastic chalice with bendy straw

After remembering

By gazing at the smiling faces

Of the icons on our phones

Even after goodbye

As the air conditioner

Whispers its solemn dirge

Even then

Death is still such a surprise

A thief in the night

For whom you’ve left the door unlocked,

Your most priced possessions organized

carefully into piles on the kitchen table
