Day 22: Dear Oil Paint: Coming Home to Texture, Time, and Trouble

Dear Oil Paint,

You’ve ruined all my favorite sweatshirts and most of my jeans. I’ve tracked you through the house because you always find a way to get on the bottom of my shoes. The day you got on the white puppy—I still haven’t quite forgiven you for that. And just last year, you nearly poisoned me.

The break was nice. Acrylic paint is fine. Better than you in so many ways—amenable to soap, never keeps me waiting—but honestly, I just miss you. We both know I could never stay away very long.

Yesterday, I listened to music while painting with acrylic. Today, I’m listening again—with you. You already know it’s a different experience. You already know I’ll put up with all your tomfoolery in exchange for that decadent texture, the slow, unrushed drying time, and the way you stay on the palette for days—sometimes weeks—always ready for adventure whenever I am.

I still have grievances. Many. But for today, let’s throw a parade and celebrate: you’re still my favorite medium.

  1. I am interested in your work, been following it for a while. Are both of your last paintings framed on music still for sale? If so want to make sure of dimensions and would like a price. Thank you
