Every single 31 day painting challenge (or 30) I discover something important. In my very first one in April 2014 I discovered birds other than pelicans. On another I discovered simple, loose, unposed figure paintings. The next it was abstracts and poetry. I could go on– musicians with their instruments, yogis in mid-pose, and now a new way to approach abstract art. The pressure of a new painting every day feels a small price to pay for finding endless new directions which I usually carry over into the next challenge while I wait for the new thing to make it’s appearance.
This is now my fourth abstract that is based on a small piece of a larger painting. The first image below is the thumbnail and the second is the larger painting it came from
This month I’ve been listening to contemporary folk music while I paint and have discovered the Wailin Jennys– a Canadian group who, according to their site, started “as a happy accident of solo singer/songwriters getting together for a one-time-only performance at a tiny guitar shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba”.
The song I’ve been particularly into lately is where today’s painting title comes from. This 31 days of painting (and all the 31 and 30 days I’ve done in the past) feels like a long a rugged road, but it always seems to get me where I’m going. I’ve included some photos at the end of this post of what this painting might look like in different interiors.
“Heaven When We’re Home”
and I’m too tired to sleep
I call my mother on the phone, she wasn’t home,
and now I’m wondering the street
I’ve been a fool, I’ve been cruel to myself
I’ve been hanging onto nothing
when nothing could be worse than hanging on
And something tells me there must be
something better than all this
I’ve fallen many times in love and every time
it’s been with the wrong man
Still I’m out there living one day at a time
and doing the best I can
Cuz we’ve all made mistakes
that seem to lead us astray
But every time they helped to get us where we are today
And that’s a good a place as any
and it’s probably where we’re best off anyway
It’s a long and rugged road
and we don’t now where it’s headed
But we know it’s going to get us where we’re going
And when we find what we’re looking for
we’ll drop these bags and search no more
‘Cuz it’s going to feel like heaven when we’re home
It’s going to feel like heaven when we’re home
There’s no such thing as perfect,
and if there is we’ll fnd it when we’re good and dead
Trust me I’ve been looking
bu tonight I think I’ll go and take a bath instead
And then maybe I’ll walk a while
and feel the earth beneath me
They say if you stop looking
it doesn’t matter if you find it
And whose to say that even if I did
it’s what I’m really looking for
It’s a long and rugged road
and we don’t now where it’s headed
But we know it’s going to get us where we’re going
And when we find what we’re looking for
we’ll drop these bags and search no more
‘Cuz it’s going to feel like heaven when we’re home
It’s going to feel like heaven when we’re home

You’ve said a few times in your blog posts that you love thick, gooey paint. This is the first time I really understood what you mean by that. And I thank you for that.
Also, gonna listen to that country song. Even though it’s not usually my thing, I liked the lyrics!
