Day 39. Tear Jerker.

“Long Walk” 10×10, oil on 1.5in canvas.

This is another commissioned piece. The man in the middle is Lance. He was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in the fall of 2013. He is currently receiving treatment at M.D. Anderson in Houston. He’s been through two surgeries and one clinical trial. He’s a fighter.

The photograph that this one is based on is a picture of Lance walking into M.D. Anderson with his two children before a surgery.

Image without the text in the background

In the background, I’ve written a few lines from a scripture that his wife gave me. I’m not sure if I like the words or if it’s distracting. Considering going back to the simpler background.

It’s funny how  this challenge can be about painting oysters (no emotional attachment whatsoever) and then this– a story I can’t seem to get out of my head. One that makes me fight back the tears as I type.

“Moreover, I will make My dwelling among you, and My soul will not reject you. ‘I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.” –Leviticus 26: 11-13
