“Welcome, Beauty” 6×6, oil on canvas, framed.
It feels a little early in the month for this kind of thing, but, no matter, today I took my palette knife to what seemed to be a perfectly fine painting and scratched off everything I could, thinking this one would just end up in the discard pile. But what I saw emerging when I scratched off the paint was interesting, compelling. I wanted to stay with it for a while. So I slowly started to add paint back, knowing I wasn’t going to bring the same frustrated energy to the rebuild as I did to the initial painting. I was the quarterback who knew the early flag had been thrown on the defense and I could just air the ball out in a free play to see what might happen.
The final painting kept a lot of what happened in the scratching off. The rebuild was mostly working with and not against the beauty of the rubble. What’s even more interesting, is that this painting was started as an invitation to Beauty. She certainly showed me something about herself.
