Description
“I Was Never Afraid of Your Darkness”
From the Take Flight Series
This painting holds two hummingbirds in striking contrast—one set against a deep, shadowed background, the other radiant in the glow of gold leaf.
The title comes from my poem “Love is Blind”, which closes with the lines:
oh my darling, I was never afraid of your darkness / for it was in it that you were born / and born again.
In this work, darkness is not something to resist or fear—it is the place of transformation, the soil of rebirth. The hummingbirds, both delicate and strong, invite us to see beauty not only in the luminous moments but also in the shadows that shape them.
Love is Blind
The demons with
whom you wrestled
left you, in the end,
bloody but exposed
and light (finally) could get it
Oh my darling,
I was never afraid
of your darkness
In it were born
and born again.
