I’m enjoying these Mary paintings perhaps even more than my birds. Again, this one is based on a statue, but the statue’s eyes didn’t have irises; adding them changes things quite a bit. I love the freedom of worrying only about the emotion, shape, and color and not the likeness as I do on other portraits. I am drawn to the blessed mother because of her absolute humanity and the way she continues to teach me about suffering. When I first started this blog, I wrote about an experience with the Blessed Mother. You can read it here. It’s one that continues to speak to me and, perhaps, inspires me to keep painting.
I’ve never thought of myself as one to create “religious art,” but I’m finding joy in these paintings and look forward to doing many more.
If you’ve not yet signed up for my email list, I’ll be sending out some holiday specials. You can subscribe here. And, of course, you’ll be entered into a drawing to win a 6×6 painting of your choice. Cheers!

I am so deeply, deeply moved by this painting! The emotion. It’s just stunning.
Thanks so much, Erica. I’m actually turning it into a larger piece for a buyer. Hard to capture that exact emotion. The bigger one, so far, is a little less tormented.
