Day 5. Already? Just?

I typically move at the pace of a hummingbird’s wings– 70 flaps a second just to stay afloat.

What is it about water that says, slow down, don’t worry, be still? Last night I attempted two other little paintings that weren’t quite right. I spilled a glass of red wine on my rug and some of my paintings (I was miraculously able to save all of them). Those types of things are not, unfortunately, atypical. What was different this time was me: oh, well, I sighed. I guess I’ll have to clean this up. Not frantic, no panic. The paintings that weren’t ready, I suppose they might be later? And if they aren’t, then they’ve prepared me for the next one that will be ready.

I am not a gentle person. Even my hugs are a little too tight. My dance moves are clumsy, my singing voice is loud but tone-deaf.  But water says to me, as I said to the wine I’d spilled: Oh well. Let’s keep moving calmly forward. And would you know, my watercolors are somehow gentle.

Might retouch a few of them, but all the paintings this month will be available, framed, once the 31 days is over.
