Day 89/100. The Thinker

Figure study by Denise Hopkins

“The Thinker” 11×14, oil on canvas. $150.00

This is a study of my cousin from New Mexico. Her mom sent in a few photos and I’ll be posting a similar one of her twin brother soon.

In the reference photo, she’s sitting on a log with a river behind her. The original plan was to include the nature– something I’ve been loving lately in these figure studies. But as it started coming together, I loved the blocks of color creating the division of space and thought it worked so well, I opted to leave out the scenery.

I did this one in advance because I’m in Tampa for work right now. I’ve noticed a couple of little adjustments I need to make before I call it a day, but this is the overall idea. Can’t wait to do the companion piece of her brother when I get home and show them side by side.
