I decided to complete this little mini musician series within my 31 paintings project with a third—and probably final—music-inspired piece. Much like Day 21, this painting came from a simple phone photo scroll, the kind that unexpectedly pulls you back into a moment you didn’t realize stayed with you.
Several years ago, I was at a restaurant in Abita Springs, Louisiana, when I heard a fantastic duo playing live music—a woman on violin and a man on guitar. I wish I could remember the name of their band, but I can’t. What I do remember clearly is the feeling: stopping mid-conversation, leaning in, and letting the music take over the room.
Between sets, I talked with them for a bit. They were touring the region in a camper van and even gave me a quick tour of their tiny living space. It was simple, cramped, and completely dedicated to the act of making and sharing music.
Traveling full-time isn’t quite the same as a daily painting practice, but I imagine van life has its own rhythms and challenges. Repetition. Fatigue. Long stretches of uncertainty. And yet—what a powerful reminder that sharing art with others, whether through music or paint, is nothing short of thrilling.
This painting is a small tribute to that moment and to traveling musicians everywhere—people who carry their art with them and offer it freely, night after night. What a gift that is. And how lucky we are to be able to do the same, in our own ways.
