Day 25. Go far, go together

“Go Together” 8×8, oil on canvas

If you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together”.-African Proverb

Another bouquet, another day to reflect on what it means to be part of a community. The group of artists creating with me this month (in all the various forms, not just painting) have made my studio time more joyful, more exciting, more connected.

I’m eager to share some of their work with you at the gallery party on February 3. The show is officially international with one of the group’s Canadian artists already having sent her piece (and it’s a great one). In addition to visual art, we will also showcase our poets and musician.

But in my excitement, I’m getting ahead. There’s still 6 whole days of painting left. So just like I did on day one, I’m going to keep taking it one day at a time.

After several emails, I’ve decided to change things up. I want to offer my 31 paintings this month to my emails subscribers first. So many of you have asked about certain paintings but are not local and cannot make it to our celebration on February 3. I’m working to give my email list first dibs on all 31 on February 1st. Make sure you’re on the list here.

Day 31. Blessing for the Seeker

"Seeking, Striving, in it with all my Heart" 48x48in oil on canvas “I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart.” -Vincent Van Gogh This is the part where I stare at the blinking cursor on my screen. Because there’s a jumble of thoughts, of what I could...

Day 29. Probably had been for quite some time.

"Expanded Horizons" 10x10 oil on canvas This bird has been my mind all month, but I’ve resisted the urge to do 31 paintings of her. I’ve seen several since the start of the month: on a drive where she flew over me for at least a mile and I had to force myself to focus...

Day 28. For A New Beginning

"Courage Kindled" 6x6 oil on canvas Today’s painting did not come swiftly or easily. I scratched off more of it than I added. But, in the end, I really think this is the painting that wanted to be brought to the surface. This is the one that took all that scraping off...

Day 22. You do not have to be good.

“Family of Things” 6×6, oil on canvas

Every time I do a 31 in 31 there comes a point where I hit a wall. I question work I once adored. I worry that, contrary to the stacks of paintings that have already collected and which stand firmly in evidence of my ability to create, that I will not be able to finish the 31 days.

Yesterday was my wall. Brick, not too tall, just tall enough that scaling it would require some help. A rope maybe. Some sticky shoes like a cartoon where the character walks up the wall parallel to the ground.

And then that wall whispered to me, as it often does, the words from a Mary Oliver poem. “You don’t have to be good,” it said. “You don’t have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting…the world offers itself to your imagination.”

And I saw a photograph of geese saved in one of my pinterest folders, and even though the painting didn’t seem like it would turn out, I did it anyway, knowing I did not have to be good. Just present. Just a part of the family of things.

Wild Geese

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting–
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

–Mary Oliver

Day 20. Our endless and proper work

“Pay Attention” 4×4, oil on canvas

“To pay attention, this is our endless and proper work.” –Mary Oliver

Twenty days in, and I’m still not sure I’ve found that rhythm yet. If not now, then when? Guess I’ll keep trucking along. I bought a protractor and compass set at the drug store a couple months ago when I realized there were only so many jars and lids that could give me the circle shapes I was after.

My four dollar compass feels just about right as the tool to use in a painting where I’m trying, however successfully or not, to imbue my subject with a sense of the sacred. I love paradox mostly because I think it always gets us closer to the truth even when we can’t quite grasp it all the way.

All my paintings from the month will be available February 3 at the gallery and online February 6. If you’re local to the coast, please consider joining us for the 31 in 31 celebration at the gallery. Click the image below for more information.

Day 18. Not Alone

“You’re Not Alone” 6×6, oil on canvas

I had a lot of fun with this one, working as much with the background shapes and colors as I did with the birds. I didn’t have it in mind exactly, but after I painted it, I was listening to a playlist I’ve been adding to for three + years, and the lyrics of a familiar song seemed to speak directly to this piece.

A lot of my work is inspired by poetry. And sometimes the poem is directly in my mind as I paint the image. But, more often, it’s just in there somewhere, stored, simmering. And it comes out without my really knowing it. It’s only later that I’ll attach the words to the painting and not at the start.

That’s what happened today with Allison Russell’s song “You’re not Alone” that features Brandi Carlile. I’ve probably listened to it 10,000 times but this time it struck me– this! This is what I was painting earlier. If you’ve not heard it yet, treat yourself to these two titans collaborating on something truly beautiful. I’ve included it below. You are welcome.

In the cradle of the circle

All the ones that came before you

Well, their strength is yours now

You’re not alone

All my paintings from the month will be available February 3 at the gallery and online February 6.

Day 17. Contrasts

“For Now” 8×8, oil on canvas

This month I keep turning to flowers when I’m not sure what comes next. They are the perfect playground for texture and color. They are a relief from studying the exact shape and form of something because they need not be precise.

My favorite part in today’s piece is the vase, which I made up entirely. I wanted stripes. I wanted dark blues and grays and light blues and bright whites.

Sometimes I use stripes in my paintings to suggest a sense of imprisonment, in this case, to time. I like to think of it in terms of contrast– the fresh beauty of the flowers against the shadow of their impermanence, caged always by time, which, strangely, seems to make them all the more beautiful.

All my paintings from the month will be available February 3 at the gallery and online February 6.
